Today we often read about exotic plants from the Amazon rainforest containing mystical antioxidants with magical effects. In Slovakia, we can also find fruits and plant products that contain high doses of antioxidants. One of the most important is Resveratrol.
What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced by some plants as a defense against pathogens (bacterial and fungal infections). The best source of resveratrol is red grapes, red wine. Resveratrol was first isolated from grapes in 1976 and in 1992 it was isolated from red wine. The highest amount of resveratrol is contained in fresh grape skins, its amount is 50-100 mg of resveratrol per gram of skin. Resveratrol is 20 times stronger than vitamin C, 5 times stronger than beta-carotene and has 50 times higher antioxidant effect than vitamin E. Resveratrol is produced by grape vines (Vitis Vinifera) in increased amounts in vineyards older than 20 years (the older the vineyard, the more antioxidants). At that time, the vine stems crack and are more attractive to fungal and bacterial infections. Excess resveratrol is stored as trans- or cis-resveratrol under the skins of grape berries. And red wines are left on their skins for more than a week, during which antioxidants, tannins and dyes leach into the wine. However, resveratrol works in synergy with other substances (polyphenols...) in wine and should not be considered in isolation.
Resveratrol and its effects
- Antioxidants protect cells, tissues and organs from the effects of free radicals, which cause premature aging of cells and impair their condition and functionality.
- Maintaining proper hormonal balance in both men and women
- Protects the cardiovascular system and reduces LDL cholesterol levels
- Beneficial effects on immunity, has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antiallergic effects
